This painting took two years to finish. Not because it was technically impossible. Because it was waiting for something — waiting for me to stop trying so hard and just paint like myself. Wild. Playful. Free. Every painting in this collection was necessary to get here. Just be you. That has always been enough.

I had an invisible coat. An actual big puffy coat I named my invisible coat and wore so nobody would notice me. It is easy to become invisible — especially at a certain age. And then I painted irises for the very first time. Sturdy. Bold. Standing straight in the spring rain, bending for nobody. Take off the invisible coat. The irises are waiting.

Every collection needs a moment of stillness. For The Healing Garden, that place is Exhale — the only landscape in the collection. After all the emotional weight of what came before, I picked up my brush and painted water and willows and spring green. That color that arrives every year like a kept promise. The lotus blooms in mud. You have earned this moment.

When I stepped back and looked at this painting I thought — it doesn't really work yet. It's half dark and half light. I need to fix it. And then I stopped. Because I realized — that IS the painting. You don't have to like where you are. You just need to accept it.

The first painting in The Healing Garden Collection began with a question I didn't know I was asking. After 45 years of making sure every person who walked through my salon door felt seen and valued, I found myself in unfamiliar territory — and I picked up a brush. What happened next surprised even me.
